Quebec Fires: Around 60 Fires on the Loose  | read this item

More than 1400 people are forced to evacuate from their homes because of raging forest fires in central Quebec. With the “help” of heavy winds, new wild fires are being started and are affecting even far away towns. The exact number of fires reported vary from report to report but most of them agree that there are more than 50 and there are more than 10 which are out of control. These fires affect almost 30,000 hectares of land.

According to provincial police,  the fires had been started by lightning storms on Tuesday night.

“They are calling for hot weather and there is not much rain on the horizon. I think [the situation] are something that will unfortunately last for some time.” said Pierre Corbeil, Native Affairs Minister.

It is unknown when the evacuees will return home but surely they won’t be allowed to unless it is 100% safe to do so.

Everything is being done to help stop these fires. Quebec’s forest fire protection agency, SOPFEU, has asked the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre in Winnipeg for more help while Red Cross volunteers help take care of those evacuees displaced by the fires.
