As resilient as this Suns team is, they were outdone by Ron Artest before the final horn. With a few seconds left with the score tied 101-101, Kobe got the inbounds pass and attempted a three that missed badly for him but fortunately for Artest. Ron-Ron was under the rim to the rescue with the put-back with less than a second left to lift the Lakers over the Suns for a 103-101 victory. Truly a remarkable albeit lucky achievement which put the visiting team in the brink of elimination from the Western Conference Finals.
The Suns were great defensively holding the Lakers team to shoot 41% overall and 29% from downtown. Steve Nash spearheaded the offense with 29 points and 11 assists while Amare only got 19 points and 4 rebounds, a far cry from his monster games in Game 3 and 4.
With less than a minute left, with the score 101-98, the Suns were able to tie the game after 3-4 3-point tries with Jason Richardson tying the game 101-101 for his lone 3-pointer. The game seemed to be headed to overtime until the Ron-Ron putback.
The Lakers on the other hand was able to withstand the great Suns D by attempting more shots. They attempted a total of 91 shots to Suns’ 77. Thus though their scoring percentage was low, it was offset by the quantity of shots they made. Kobe almost had a triple double with 30 points, 11 rebounds and 9 assists while blocking 4 shots. While Fisher and Gasol combined for 43 points. Lamar had an outstanding game with 17 points and 13 rebounds.
The game was LA Lakers throughout but the Suns kept on hanging around. They lagged behind in double digit numbers until the 4th quarter when they roared back to life. Unfortunately, they lost to a last second put-back.
