The Lakers, as mighty as they are, was not able to stop the fiery Phoenix Suns from evening the series. In a Game 4 which looked like an offensive clinic, both teams shot a total of 20 3-pointers. This led to a 115-106 game score which favors the Phoenix Suns. Kobe was hot throughout the game but that is nothing when the whole Phoenix Suns team was scorching hot. Surprisingly, Channing Frye led the 3-point barrage.
The Suns’ All-Star players, Nash and Stoudemire, had a fine night with 15 points and 8 assists, and 21 points and 8 rebounds respectively. But what really put an exclamation mark in the Suns’ game was the bench’s energy plays. The bench made 9 out of the 11 3-points the team made with Frye making 4 of those.
As usual, Alvin Gentry still employed the “girly” zone defense which the Los Angeles Lakers team hasn’t been able to figure out yet. He also plays the 2nd unit as if it was the 1st unit with no starters in the lineup. Surprisingly, this has worked out pretty well because the 2nd unit brings energy and speed that the 1st unit lacks.
On the other hand, the visiting team, the LA Lakers, had to depend on Kobe Bryant to help them stay in the game. Kobe racked up a monstrous game with 38 points, 7 rebounds and 10 assists with a big part of those points coming from his 6 3-points (18 points). 4 other Lakers were in double figures scoring but that was not enough to fight off the burning Suns.
Phil Jackson and his team still has a hard time breaking the zone defense. If their hardship continues, we might continually see the zone the whole of this series.
Game 5 is on Thursday, May 27 – 9:00 p.m. ET.
