The first game of the Western Conference Finals has just finished and the Los Angeles Lakers showed the Phoenix Suns why they are the reigning world basketball champions. In a 128-107 blow-out victory over the Suns, the Lakers displayed their offensive prowess all night in front of a frenzied LA crowd.
The Lakers’ Big Three (Kobe, Gasol, Odom) had a combined total of 80 points. But the biggest of them all, unsurprisingly, was Bryant who had 40 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and a steal, shooting 13 out of 23 with 3 of those from downtown.
The Suns’ up-tempo style was replicated by the Lakers at a much better efficiency with fast-breaks and pick-n-rolls none of the Suns players could stop. The Suns’ newly found defense was also non-existent giving the LA players a 58% field goal percentage.
Steve Nash on the other hand had 13 points, 4 rebounds and 13 assists but did not play at in the 4th quarter with the lead ballooning to more than 20 points. The Suns had a total of 22 3 point attempts with only 5 going in.
Robin Lopez was back in the lineup coming from an injury and gave the Suns a much needed inside presence. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to stop Kobe Bryant and company.
Grant Hill was guarding Kobe most of the night and did a good job. Kobe on the other hand was being Kobe and was literally unstoppable the whole night.
When asked about Lebron’s being the regular season MVP and how he felt about it Bryant said, “I just want another cookie”. Yes, Kobe doesn’t want the glamor that comes with being the MVP because he is all past that. He wants to win another championship to add another ring in his collections.
Game 2 will be on Wednesday night.
Among the crowd were actors Jessica Alba, Dustin Hoffman, John C. Reilly, Sylvester Stallone and David Arquette.
