After Paul Pierce’s pompous boasting that they won’t go back to LA, the Lakers team took this to heart and beat the Celtics 91-84 in a Game 3 that saw big fluctuations in the Celtics’ superstars’ production. After leading in double digits at the half, the Celtics roared back with a furious rally to cut the lead down to a single digit coming into the fourth quarter. However, Fisher saved the Lakers from breaking down by taking the big shots others wouldn’t want to take.
Derek Fisher took over for Bryant when he was held scoreless in the first 10 minutes of the 4th quarter. Tough shot after tough shot, Fisher just kept putting the ball in on his way to 16 meaningful points. Kobe had 29 points but took a lot of bad shots that did not go in. Pau Gasol had an okay game with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists.
After the Celtics started fast early, it was the Lakers that took the lead most of the game thanks to the Celtics’ sloppy defense and horrible offense. The Lakers shot a respectable 44% from the field to Boston’s 43%.
A game after making history, Ray Allen almost made another one by shooting 0-13 with 8 of those from the 3-point line. One more shot and he would have tied the NBA finals futility record. Kevin Garnett was big tonight hitting 11 out of 16 shots on his way to 25 points and 6 rebounds. Unfortunately for the Celtics, that was not enough fire power to overcome the Lakers.
The Boston team was moving the ball around well but did not shoot and rebound well leading to their Game 3 defeat. If they want to get back into the game in Game 4, they need to do better on all those aspects.
Game 4 is still at Boston on Thursday night, Jun 10 9:00pm EDT.
